Are Gratuity Charges on Cruise Lines On the Rise?

On the average, for a comtemporary class cruise line such as Norwegian Cruise Line, the gratuity has been $12 per passenger per day. Are they on the increase? They are when you sail on Norwegian.
Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that they will be increasing their gratuity to $12.95 per passenger. $14.95 to passengers who have suites or concierge service.
Gratuities are NOT included in the cruise fare. Gratuities are charged to each passenger on a daily basis to pay for the services provided to them by the room steward staff (the people who come and clean and pick up your room twice a day), and that of the staff servicing you in the included dining rooms (main dining room) - ie: the waiter, assistant waiter and head waiter.
These charges are added to your account on a daily basis if they have not been prepaid in advance of the sailing. The charges are expected to be paid in full no later than the last day of the cruise by credit card or cash. These charges can be disputed by going to the Customer Service Desk if for some reason you are dissatisfied for the service that you have received.
