BUY A BEVERAGE PACKAGE OR NOT WHILE CRUSING
Beverage packages are an optional purchase on most of the contemporary class ship (Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean) and premium cruise lines (Princess, Holland America and Celebrity0 that enable passengers to drinking pleasures while on board their ships.
Most alcoholic beverage packages run about $50 per passenger per day plus gratuities of 15%. Most lines put a limit on the price of the beverage not to exceed $10 per glass. They may also put on a daily limit per passenger at the cruise lines discretion. Meaning that they can cut you off at any time they feel that you have over endulged. The package must be purchased for total duration of the cruise. Some cruise lines require that all adult passengers in a stateroom must purchase the same beverage package. Sharing is not allowed!
If you are a person who only likes a glass of wine at dinner, or a drink at the show, a beverage package is not for you. Most cocktails vary in price and can range for $6 to $15 per glass depending on its contents and the cruise line. Domestic beers run about $5 per can. Soda pop about $2-$3 per can. Wine $8 + per glass.
My recommendation is that if you are going to have 5 or more alcoholic beverage cocktails a day - go for it!
Those enticing frozen cocktails concoctions that drift by you on the bar waiter's tray as they walk by your tanning lounge by the pool are tempting. The beverage package will enable you to sample and enjoy a variety of drink creations without breaking the budget if you were to buy them on an a la carte basis (per drink).
The beverage packages are a great value for those who have been known to accumulate a bar bill while on a cruise of $1000 or more, or simply enjoy their drinks. $1000 has been known to be the average expense on a 7-night cruise.
Whatever your decision, PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.
