Cruise Lines to Pull Out of Houston

We are extremely disappointed to hear that the Port of Houston will be closing due to the fact that Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess Cruises will be discontinuing their itineraries that go to/from this cruise port as of April 2016.
This pull out will reduce the options for travelers that reside in or near the region as places that they can drive to or fly to at minimal expense. These cruise lines offer alternative or varied itineraries that the lines that sail to/from the nearby Port of Galveston do not. IE: Trujillo, Honduras (Norwegian Cruise Line), and Costa Rica and Panama, or Canada/New England to Houston (special itineraries being offered by Princess Cruises). These lines do offer the standard 7-night cruise itineraries to the Western Caribbean, such as Belize, Roatan, and Cozumel; as well as, Jamaica, Grand Cayman, and Cozumel from Houston.
In a recent article in the Houston Chronicle, the article cites that the cruise lines will be pulling out because of the issues these lines face.
Some of the reasons are:
Fog Delays: the nearby Port of Galveston experiences such issues as well.
Long, Winding Journeys Through the Ship Canal: it takes the ships a good period of time to get to international waters. This prevents the cruise lines from opening their shops and casinos to passengers. Income on which all cruise lines rely on heavily.
Demand for ships sailing other destinations: the demand for destinations such as Asia are in the increase. With a limited number of ships in each fleet, the lines are determining where their services would be more profitable.
It is not too late to experience the budget priced and value-packed "Freestyle" experience that Norwegian Cruise Line has to offer; or, the value of a premium cruise line experience at competitive prices with Princess Cruises.
