CRUISE PLANNERS AGENT VISITS PANAMA CANAL

In a continuing effort to gain knowledge from firsthand experience, Linda Kolanko of Cruise Planners, Denton, Texas has recently taken a cruise to the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal is known to be a manmade wonder of the world.  It is a means for which ocean liners can go from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans without going around the southernmost point of South America.  Saving time and money.

The canal consists of a series of locks which raises and lowers the water levels to enable the water craft to journey along the path from ocean to ocean.  Gatun Lake serves as a large fresh water reservoir for the water used in the canal.  The water is the canal is not salt or sea-water.  The average migration of the ships is 8 hours from ocean to ocean.  Waiting times at each end of the canal or on the lake can vary according to traffic and demand.

What also makes the canal extraordinary is that it is very narrow.  Only ships up to a certain width can enter.  Making things very tight.  In order to navigate and assist the ships through the locks locotives are used to pull and guide the ships through the locks.  Anywhere from two to eight locomotives will be used depending on the size of the ship.

"It is awesome to watch as the ships go through the locks", says Linda Kolanko.  She was amazed at how quickly the water is disbursed or brought into the lock depending on the water level that was to be achieved.  Millions of gallons of fresh water are sent to or retrieved from reservoirs alongside the locks.  The whole process takes approximately 10 minutes per lock.  "Amazing".

Panama City is also very beautiful and cosmopolitan.  A great place to visit.
