Island of St. Vincent, Southern Caribbean
Published Friday, January 25th 2013St. Vincent is not one of those islands frequented by the cruise lines, and thus remains relatively untouched. This beautiful island is located in the Southern Caribbean. Its two main attractions are a historic fort, Fort Charlotte, and a botanical garden. It is an island that is also recognized for scuba diving and snorkeling with vast marine life.
We added St. Vincent to our vast list of traveled and visited islands in the Caribbean during a special cruise offered by Royal Caribbean. Regretfully we arrived to this beautiful island on a Sunday when all the stores and restaurants were closed with the exclusion of the select few located next to the pier. It was a fun place to hang out apart from the ship and to enjoy some of the local brew at a cool and refreshing price, and enjoy some of the lively local entertainment.
Our time at this island was limited. With an early afternoon departure that did not give much time to explore the beaches on your own. The beaches were located 45 minutes to an hour away.
Friendly taxi drivers awaited you near the pier and beyond as we walked through the quaint town of colorful Caribbean buildings. Each driver eager to be your personal tour guide of their beloved home.
We wandered down the streets in search of churches. We came across St. Mary's Catholic Church and were taken by the remains of a structure that featured Gothic architecture. The fascade or walls that made up the church property included a small church or chapel for its regular services, rectory, and a courtyard in honor of the Virgin Mary. This church and its people are humble. The people extremely warm and friendly. Making you feel very welcome. It was fun to hear the parts of the mass celebrated in a Reggae style.
There were a couple of other churches that were open and offering their services to the locals and visitors alike. A nice taste of the culture and traditions of the island.
As a travel agent specializing in cruises it is important for us to visit and experience the islands and destinations that our clients might have the opportunity to visit. To lend suggestions and tips as to how they could enhance their cruising experience. We can all sit behind a desk, read magazines, brochures and articles on the internet, but it is something else to physically be there and to be able to share.
