Why is it called luxury?
It is the level of the quality of service, cuisine and entertainment that you will find included in your luxury cruise vacation. There are other inclusions that may not found in the other classes of cruise lines. The initial out of pocket costs more, but in the end can possibly save you money and offer you a much more satisfying overall experience.
When you say luxury, what you do think of first or have pictured in your mind? You expect the best in quality in everything. You picture yourself totally relaxed and pampered. Crew tending to your needs attentively and graciously. The decor of your room, the linens and stateroom amenities to be soft, comfortable, plush. An attentive room steward who is readily available to get you more ice, extra towels, or to get your shirt pressed for dinner that night. For dinner you may expect dishes that you will not find at home, except in upscale restaurants. Specially and freshly prepared from fresh ingredients, and beautifully presented - just for you.
The ships are smaller and accommodate fewer passengers. The staterooms are still spacious, comfortable and welcoming. This means a greater crew to passenger ratio in your favor. It also means that these ships can visit ports that the larger ships cannot enter.
Why is the price so high compared to other cruise lines?
As in all things, you get what you pay for. You expect the best of everything you have to pay for it. You can pay for it all up front - as you would with a luxury cruise, in most cases; or, you can nickel and dime your way with the other cruise lines. When you add up what you put out for drinks, airfare, etc. after you have cruised on a premium cruise line, you will find that you could have had a better quality cruise vacation for that with the luxury line or less.
The other day I looked for a cruise for a customer interested in a cruise to Tahitti. Everything was pretty well equal in the duration of the cruise, and the ports of call being visited. I was able to find a luxury cruise that included roundtrip airfare from their city of departure, transfers, and an oceanview stateroom for about what it would cost them to go on a premium cruise line, in an interior stateroom when you include the air and transfers. Again, the inclusions of the amenities and services that are included with luxury cruise line may not included in the premium cruise lines price.
Now which do you think is the better deal?

The destinations or ports of call can be, and will be in many cases, places that the other cruise lines cannot access because of their larger ships. The duration of the cruises do vary.
There are so many advantages to sailing on these smaller ships. If you are accustomed to sailing on the larger ships, there are some modifications and compensations made because of space limitations. Just think, no fighting over lounges by the pool or a seat in the theater!
