Mexico opened it doors to visitors back in July.  Allowing guests to enter the country without the requirement of being tested 48 to 72 hours prior to the date for scheduled arrival.

The Dominican Republic has opened it doors to visitors as well, but are requiring visitors to undergo Covid-19 testings prior to arrival and provide documentation of a negative test.  This will be lifted as of October 1, 2020.   Random visitors to this country will be selected and required to undergo testing at the time of arrival.

Until October 1, 2020, the following will be valid:

 - Social distancing and the use of masks will be mandatory for the duration of a visitor’s stay.

- All tourists visiting a hotel will be granted, on a temporary basis, a travel assistance plan that will include coverage for emergencies, telemedicine, lodging for prolonged stays and costs for changing flights in the event of an infection. This insurance will be provided at no cost to the visitor until December 2020 and will be 100% paid for by the Dominican State.

- A Sanitary Bubble will be implemented to ensure that hotel employees stay as long as possible within the facilities.

- Properties will implement effective health management with suppliers, contractors and employees. The latter will be regularly tested and will follow a specific protocol to come in and out of the facilities.

- Labor regulations will be adapted to minimize and mitigate risks for employees.

The government said that this protocol is in the process of being certified by the World Travel and Tourism Council’s Safe Travels and Buró Veritas, both world leaders in certifications of the sector.

A new Tourism Cabinet, led by the President of the Republic, and under the executive direction of the Minister of Tourism will manage the plan. Institutions that directly affect the industry’s value chain will make up the Cabinet, which will constantly monitor the impact and effectiveness of each initiative implemented and adjust as necessary.

The remainder of the countries in the Caribbean are either open with testing requirements prior to arrival (includes Jamaica, Antigua and more), may require a 14-day quarantine, or are closed to all U.S. visitors or U.S. visitors from specific States.

Each country requires that you complete a medical questionnaire, and may require that you be tested at the time of arrival despite your negative test report from your home state or medical facility.

Resorts may have their own requirements on an individual basis.  This may include temperature checks at time of check in, testing, or more.

Please consult the embassy website for each country that you are scheduled to arrive at for the most recent updates and requirements during this very liquid situation.

Check with your resort/hotel's website for their updates and requirements prior to departure.

This is your responsibility as much as it is your travel advisor's.   Most tour companies and insurance companies will not cover you in the event you arrive at a country and are turned away, or are required to undergo a quarantine.

Do be aware that there are some outstanding deals that won't last long for travel to the Dominican Republic, Mexico and other places for 2021.   It is time to book and travel later!
