The Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas began sailing out of Galveston, Texas in January 2017. It was time for us to experience it firsthand and to learn the ins and outs of the largest ship to sail from Texas.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time on our 7-night cruise to the ports of Belize, Roatan and Cozumel, Mexico, and would do this again and again.
Stateroom:
Staying in a balcony stateroom we enjoyed the views and waking up to someplace new every morning. Our balcony was a very good size, and our stateroom reasonably spacious. One of the largest balconies we've had on any cruise or line in a long time! Great for relaxing, sharing a glass of wine, reading a book, or enjoying the romance of a new and unique sunset.
Onboard Amenities:
The things we loved most about the ship were the new waterslides! The Boomerang is exciting. It makes you feel like you are going to fling off the ship, but just at the last minute you are brought down to earth (oops, make that ship).
The ship offers the "Flowrider". A surf simulator. Sorry, we weren't quite brave to try this, but let me tell you there were many people who were. Actually, many would surprise you and age had no limit.
There is a rock-climbing wall those who like the adventure of climbing to new heights. My husband does this at least once every time he sails on a ship that has one.
To cool off and to be cool, there is the ice skating rink that is open to the public for limited hours. It's an opportunity to see if you can do the camel, spin like a top, or simply stay on your feet.
For the kiddo - Splashaway Bay Waterpark. Oh, to be a kid again! Waterslides, water cannons, and so much more. One of the best I have seen on the seas. A couple nice safety features too - life jackets for the little ones to wear, and pool side ambassadors who help watch and monitor the kids as they have a splash of a time! Parents. The ambassadors are not a babysitting service. They are there to help you keep an eye out for your safety and well-being.
Shows:
"Saturday Night Fever", the Broadway show adapted to the stage, was exciting and well done. Got to love the singing, dancing and the energy of the performers. Let's all start singing along as they sing "Staying Alive".
The ice skating show, "Encore" was great too! It is amazing what the skaters can do on a postage-sized stamp rink. Yes, they make the camel and spinning like a top look so easy. I dare you to give it a try!
Theme Parties: Parades, musicians, and 70's night. Most were hosted on the Promenade Deck.
Liberty of the Seas Passenger Pop Choir. A lot of fun for those who love to sing and those who simply want to join along. A specially correographed song was learned by the participants, along with some hand/dance movements. If you are as uncoordinated as I am, this was a challenge, but one heck of a good time! We performed our piece on and under the coveted bridge on the Promenade Deck. A couple of highly talented passengers were the stars of the show as they had solos. Got to give the two little girls (about 10 years of age) credit. They got out there and shined. Will you blend your voice to the rhythm of the sea?
Food:
Can't forget that! It can made or break your cruise sometimes. In our case it was ....Yummy!! Everything we ordered was delish. The selection was very good too!
One thing about cruising - Sometimes it is tough to make a decision between dishes too, or that dish was so good you want another. No problem, go ahead an order that extra dish. Not happy or don't like, tell your waiter and he will do what he can to make things right for you. It's a great opportunity to taste new things too!
A rule of thumb with most any cruise line or ship - You just need to figure out what the head chef on your sailing is good at. It could be beef, seafood or something else. Once you have discovered his magic, keep selecting that type of food/meat. You won't be disappointed.
Service:
The Lido Deck, like on any other line and or ship had its challenges the first day, and from there on it was very good. Crew helped you find a table, were reasonably fast at clearing tables, and going around with coffee carts to give you a cup or top yours off.
Room Steward: Friendly, but hardly seen. He'd introduce himself to you the day/night your arrive and tells you how you can get a hold of him if you need him. Our room was cleaned and prepared for the day in a reasonable period of time.
Dining Room Crew: Tried to make our experience as pleasant and personable as possible. Learning our names, our drink preferences and more! A couple sharing our table celebrated their anniversary on night and the crew did what they can to make it as fun and memorable as possible.
Ports of Call and Excursions:
My thing is to go to the beach. I simply love the feel of the warm sand on my feet, the sound of the waves as it hits the shoreline, and just swimming along in the warm turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean.
We took an excursion through Royal Caribbean to a beach club in Roatan. Transportation to the club was included, lounge, umbrella, along with a nice and tasty Caribbean/American lunch buffet, and all the drinks you cared. The nicer beaches on the island require a taxi ride. An excursion is highly recommended. This beach was full of white sand and the water crystal clear and inviting.
While in Belize we again tried an excurstion provided through Royal Caribbean. It included a small shuttle boat to a private island. The island was situated in what almost seemed like the middle of nowhere, but was like paradise. Well kept and clean sandy island with palm trees and more. There were adequate lounges, hammocks, umbrellas, washroom facilities, restaurant and bar. Included in as well was a lunch consisting of barbequed chicken, rice, cole slaw, salad, and cake. A drink was offered at lunch only. For those who wish to explore in a canoe, one can rent one. We called the island "Starfish Island", and for a reason. There were starfish close to the shore line that you can see through the crystal clear sparkling water. Swimming was excellent too! There is a designated beach for that too! There are some areas unsafe for swimming as they are a thoroughfare to ssmall motorized marine craft.
Cozumel. We had been to Cozumel so many times that we decided to stay on board to enjoy the ship and explore it while it there were fewer people. Do I wish I went to the beach? You bet, but I was also glad to be able to relax and enjoy the ships amenities.
Summary:
One of the best ships to ever sail out of Galveston! So much to do while on board and there is something for everyone of every age. Great for multi-generation families who want to have things for all to do and to collect memories as they spend precious time together. I have just touched on most of the features that make it amazing.
Coming soon to Galveston - 4- and 5 night sailings by Royal Caribbean year round!
