Proposed New Normal for Cruises and Resorts
Published Wednesday, April 22nd 2020 - Updated Wednesday, April 22nd 2020
Much has been learned over the course of the last several months about the Coronavirus. How it spreads. How it has affected the travel industry. What needs to be done. One thing for sure...things will change.
Some of the suggested proposals that may be temporary or permanently implemented for a new normal are :
- Lower occupancy level. Especially in crowded public areas such as theaters, restaurants, promenades, atriums, etc. Some are proposing an occupancy level of no more that 50% of what was common. Lots of space between persons not traveling with each other in the same cabin or family. Restaurants may limit the table size to only 4 persons. It will be a considerable distance to the next. Some people might say, hooray, "we are not crowded like sardines anymore. I can breath".
- Decrease the level of occupancy. Everyone had been striving for 100% occupancy, and this may not be accomplished for some time as a precautionary measure.
- Medical screening for people checking in at resorts or hotels, or about to embark on a cruise. Needing to fill out a health questionnaire and have their temperatures checked. This will be true for all employees clocking in to work and all crew on ships reporting for duty.
- A letter or "Certificate of Health" from their physician stating that their patient is healthy may be required of people traveling with pre-existing conditions may be required to get a enough to travel at the time of consult. This consultation may have to taken place and documented within a limited time period of time prior to arrival. Visitors over the age of 70 may also be required to obtain such documentation whether they have pre-exisiting or underlying conditions or not.
- No inside cabins. Only balcony or higher for cruises.
- No buffet; or, no more self-serve service venues.
- Gloves and face masks to be worn by waiters/waitresses at all times during service. May be extended to all on duty staff or crew.
- Increased flow of fresh air into public areas. Particularly to those cabins/staterooms that do not have balconies for access to fresh air.
- Deep clean/disinfect all elevators, rails, and high touch surfaces at least once every hour.
- Increase the number of qualified medical doctors and personnel to treat high risk medical emergencies at on property health clinics or hospital.
- Clean and disinfect all rooms/staterooms/cabins to higher standards at least once a day.
The industry leaders and valued medical experts are working together to create an environment in which people can feel safe and as free of illness as possible. Whether it is Coronavirus, Norovirus, Legionnaires Disease, Flu, etc. Much will be done to prevent these from occurring as you travel and during your stay.
Again, one thing for certain...things will change. As these proposals or policies begin to be published we will do our best to keep you informed.
My desire is for you to travel with confidence. Trust that all in the travel industry are doing all that they can to keep you safe and well.
