It was announced today that the implementation of the Read ID Act would be delayed until 2018. Therefore, allowing for residents from all states to use their driver's licenses as an acceptable form of identification for domestic air travel and closed-loop cruises.
Originally, it had been reported that individuals traveling by air, and closed-loop cruises (cruises beginning and ending at the same port), would be required to have valid passports as identification for travel. 5 states were listed where individuals from these states could not use their drivers licenses for their ID. The current driver's licenses did not comply with the standards set by the Real ID Act. Forcing residents from these states who planned to travel in 2016 to apply and obtain valid passports for all travel by air or cruise until the state complied with the issuance of licenses meeting the standards set by DHS.
This delay will enable all states to implement the standards set by the DHS in their issuance of driver's licenses and state issued identification.
