The Port of Galveston is a convenient port to Texans and neighboring states.  It also offers an alternative to those who would prefer not having to fly to Florida, or just to give them a new place to visit.  As it is a smaller port, you do not have to deal with the traffic, hassles and delays associated with the larger ports of Florida.

Galveston is a quaint and relatively quiet island with history.  The representatives of the Chamber of Commerce claim that Galveston was a major port of entry during the time when immigrants were coming from Europe.  Their history doesn't stop there.  They have been struck by two major hurricanes.  One in the early 1900's and recently within the last two years.  After the first hurricane the citizens of Galveston, along with the government built a 17 foot seawall to protect the community from flooding.  Although the seawall didn't save the city from flooding during the recent hurricane, it helped minimize it and reduced the total impact of damage that could have happened.

Galveston is a modest tourist island that offers various attractions that include a year-round waterpark with heated water.  The beach area is very welcoming.  Moody Gardens which consists of an awesome Aquarium with a magnificent penguin exhibit.  It also offers a garden and science exhibit.  Visit the Flight Museum features planes from different eras.  You may even have the opportunity to fly in a B16.  Hotels and motels for most any budget are available.  The most historical and perhaps most beautiful are the Hotel Galvez, the Tremont House, and the Harbor House. 

Beautiful Victorian style homes line the streets of Galveston.  Although there is still some evidence of damage from the last hurricane, the proud property owners of Galveston have done an awesome job of restoring their homes in a short period of time.  Simple gorgeous.

Galveston is home to two cruise lines.  Carnival and Royal Caribbean.  Carnival offers the Carnival Conquest with two itineraries, each 7 days in duration.  One takes you to the Western Caribbean and visits the islands of Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.  The other itinerary takes you to the Eastern Caribbean and visits Key West and the Bahamas. Carnival also offers a shorter duration cruise of 4 or 5 days to the Western Caribbean.  Its 4-day itinerary goes to Cozumel.  The 5-day goes to Progresso and Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean sails out of Galveston on a seasonal basis out of Galveston.  Generally November through April.  Royal Caribbean offers the Voyager of the Seas and two 7-day itineraries.  One goes to the islands of Jamaica, Grand Cayman and Cozumel.  The other goes to Roatan, Costa Maya and Cozumel.

It is hoped by many Texas residents that in time the Port of Galveston or the Port of Houston will be home to more cruise lines and offer more or different destinations.
